Seagate advances second-generation HAMR technology, 30-terabyte HDDs arrive

Earlier this year, Seagate released its first 20 TB capacity drives based on Heat Assisted Magnetic Engraving (HAMR) technology, and after some more experimentation with this technology, the company is preparing to launch a new line of hard drives with capacities up to 30TB.

The information was disclosed by Gianluca Romano, the company’s chief financial officer, who said that Seagate didn’t talk much about HAMR because their first generation of drives weren’t suitable for mass adoption, although the company has been working on a second generation that most likely has up to 30TB of storageas well as more reliable manufacturing that will facilitate mass adoption in data centers.

HAMR | Creating the Future

Seagate has made the areal density of a 9-disk device so high that it can store between 30 and 40 TB of data. Still, this does not mean that we will see 40TB drives in the near future, as having a prototype in the lab is a very different thing than having the system ready for reliable mass production.

Romano did not mention any possible dates for the launch of this new line of hard drives, although, based on the Seagate roadmaps, these hard drives are likely to arrive only during 2023 or 2024. Still, there is a possibility that we will see them in the future. The end of 2022, as the company appears to be well on track in its development, although there is no official confirmation on this, at least for now.

What do you think about these great advances from Seagate? When do you think these new 30TB hard drives will be ready?
