Kioxia shows PCIe 5.0 SSD performance: 14000 Mbps read speed

Japanese SSD maker Kioxia today showed the performance of a prototype of an SSD with PCIe 5.0 connection, showing its incredible performance. Scheduled for release later this year, the CD7 series offers nearly twice the IOPS performance of the previous generation of PCIe 4.0 SSDs.

The reading speed of PCIe 5.0 SSD prototypes can reach 14,000 Mbpswhile the write speed is around 7,000 Mbps. The read speed represents a 103% increase compared to Kioxia’s PCIe 4.0 models. In the photo of the presentation you can also see the evolution of the latencies. Read latency was reduced by 77% and write latency by 50%. IOPS increased 50%, with random read increasing 79% and 76% for writing.

The SDD will come in 2.5-inch EDSFF E3S format and will use a total of four PCIe 5.0 lanes. Kioxia plans to launch an M.2 version in the future, although these first versions will be oriented to Data Center and Companies. The CD7 line will have capacities from 1.6 TB to 30 TB.

As for when next-gen PCIe 5.0 SSDs will appear among consumers, this will likely happen sometime in 2022 as platforms from AMD and Intel begin to reach different markets. Intel Alder Lake CPUs will support PCIe Gen 5.0 although the industry is waiting for Phison to finalize its driver for these SSDs to begin mass production, so SSDs will arrive later than the new Alder Lake platform.

Phison will be the best choice for premium SSDs with PCIe 5.0 connection, competing with Samsung drivers. Marvell has also announced its Bravera SC5 SSD controller based on PCIe Gen 5.0 (NVMe 1.4b standard) which will also hit the market in mid-2022, so we don’t expect to see any models soon.
