Why are the latest smartphones launched by Oppo, Xiaomi and beyond, based on Snapdragon 865, single SIM? Isn't it strange that Xiaomi and Oppo launch top of the range Android single SIM?
Today we can finally give you the motivation in an official way. The problem is with the Snapdragon 865. The latest Qualcomm processor in fact, while having support for practically all bands and networks, does not allow the use of Dual SIM with 5G connection.
In practice, today and in Europe at least, it is not possible to use a device with Snapdragon 865 and active 5G connection if you have two sims installed. In fact, both SIMs will automatically switch to 4G and will not be able to take the fifth generation network. Only by deactivating a sim will you be able to access 5G networks.
Qualcomm did not explain the exact reasons but the problem should however be resolvable through a software update that will be released perhaps in May. There seem to be network incompatibilities in our continent or at least in terms of signal and connectivity. Maybe a missing certification.
Do you want to know the downside? The Exynos 990 of the Galaxy S20 allows instead to use the dual sim with a single SIM in 5G already now.
And if you were wondering, the Kirin 990 allows you to use only one 5G sim.
