i5 10600K vs i5 9600K: Specs | Hashrate | CPU | Test – Which is Best? – Performance in comparison
We have already talked about the new Intel series in many other comparisons, where we compared the performance of this tenth generation with that of AMD’s Zen 2 processors and Intel’s ninth generation.
Today’s confrontation sees opposition the mid-range of the tenth generation, the i5 10600K, with the mid-range of the ninth generation, the i5 9600K. Is the leap to the new generation also convenient for those who own a processor of the previous one? Let’s find out together.
i5 10600K | i5 9600K | |
Architecture: | Comet Lake | Coffee Lake |
Socket: | LGA 1200 | LGA 1151 |
Core: | 6 | 6 |
Threads: | 12 | 6 |
Base frequency: | 4.1 GHz | 3.7 GHz |
Maximum turbo frequency: | 4.8 GHz | 4.6 GHz |
TDP: | 125 W | 95 W |
Overclock: | And | And |
Price: | 288€ | 225€ |
The comparison between the data sheets shows us, as the first and most obvious difference, the different architecture on which the two processors are based: Comet Lake the 10600K and Coffee Lake the 9600K. Also the supported socket is different, with l’i5 10600K that supports il socket LGA 1200: this new socket forces us, in case we want to buy the processor, to also buy one of the new Z490 motherboards, whose current price is quite high. Both processors feature 6 cores, the 10600K has But double the threads. The new Intel processor has a bit of an advantage in both base and maximum frequency. Being part of the K series, both processors are overclockable. The price difference is around 20% but will it also be felt in the performance?
Let’s start testing with Cinebench, a widely used software that allows us to compare the performance of the two CPUs both in single-thread and in multi-thread. Test results tell us that the i5 10600K is on average 5% more performing in single-thread, e almost the 30% more handsome in multi-thread.
In the second test we are going to observe the performance in compression and decompression on 7-Zip, one of the most used programs for managing compressed files. In these tests the difference in performance remains high, with the i5 10600K which is 30% more powerful both in compression and in decompression.
We close the production tests with Corona: also this last test confirms the clear superiority of the 10600K, which manages to clearly detach its rival of the ninth generation.
In gaming, the situation is much more balanced than in production tests, with the 10600K which has a performance advantage of around 10%, therefore less than in previous tests.
Going to the point, if you own an i5 9600K you should upgrade to new 10600K? Our answer is no: although there is a good difference in performance, especially in production tests, the costs to be incurred to switch to 10600K are too high: in addition to the CPU you must also consider the purchase of a Z490 motherboard, which currently has a significant cost, this makes it the total expense too much greater than the performance advantage you would get. The situation changes if you have an older processor: the i5 10600K has excellent performance both in production tests and in gaming, where it can hold its own against much more expensive processors, and a competitive price, for this it is the ideal solution for those who want to replace their old Intel processor with a new one. If, on the other hand, you are also open to AMD processors, we suggest you take a look at the article where we compared the i5 10600K with the Ryzen 5 3600.
To conclude, we leave you below some links from where you can buy both the i5 10600K and the Ryzen 5 3600 at the best price possible.
