[Test] Crucial MX500 1To – Conseil Config

Introduction

Hi all!

Back at Crucial today with a test of their latest SSD, the MX500 in 1TB version! The MX series represents the top of the range of the brand and is intended for owners of configuration wanting a powerful model while being enduring. Despite everything Crucial has decided to equip its latest SSDs with TLC chips, so controversial for their theoretical endurance lower than MLC chips even if in practice and with traditional use nobody will see the difference 😉
The MX500 series is made up of 4 models ranging from 250 GB to 2 TB, so say goodbye to the “small” 120 GB which these days are still quite limited unless you only install the operating system and essential software. . Prices range from around € 82 for the 250 GB model to € 510 for the 2 TB, through € 260 for the 1 TB and € 140 for the 525 GB, this puts the MX500 at an excellent capacity / price ratio, to see if the tests are conclusive and if they are recommendable 😉

As we can see here we are dealing with SSDs in the standard 2.5 ″ format like all the other models in the range. The MX500 is however equipped with TLC memory, which is supposed to be less enduring than the MLC (which one finds on the entry-level BX300!), Even if the figures announced by Crucial do not point in this direction. Indeed here the endurance goes from 100 TB (54 GB per day for 5 years) for the model to a huge 7000 TB (385 GB per day !!) for the 2 TB version, something to see coming.

The speeds are slightly increased in reading compared to the MX300, going from 530 MB / s to 560 MB / s against 510 MB / s in reading. The good thing here being the maintenance of the writing speed on the whole range, in fact on all the other models the more the total capacity is reduced and the more the writing speed goes down, this is not the case. on the MX500 and that’s good!
The MTBF is also increasing, going from 1.5 million hours for the MX300 to 1.8 million hours for the MX500, that said at this level we will not seek to know if the figure has been artificially inflated or not. 😉
Another good thing is also the warranty, which goes from 3 to 5 years and finally comes to be upgraded with the main competitors of the brand, it is about time!

Only the price of the 1TB version is known for the moment, with 265 € it ranks very well compared to its competitors (such as the 850 Evo from Samsung or the MX300) and if the prices of the other models follow they will be able to be very interesting. To see however in the tests!

Unpacking and bundle

The box is as usual at Crucial very sober, with the photo of the beast, the name of the model and its capacity as well as the logo of the brand. Here we forget the unnecessary marketing formulas, and that’s good.

At the back there is not a lot of information, apart from the contents of the box as well as the mention of the 5 year warranty which has also been added via a sticker (last minute change most certainly for get up to speed with the competition).

Inside the box we find exactly the same as on all the other models of the brand. The SSD is placed in a plastic mold and then that’s it! Transport shouldn’t be a problem though, so there isn’t really much to say about it.

The bundle is clearly minimalist, with a quick installation sheet as well as an adapter allowing the thickness of the SSD to be increased from 7 to 9.5mm, nothing more!

We take the same thing and start over, the MX500 is made of an aluminum frame which makes the thing very light and rather solid, the beast does not look “cheap”. A sticker on each side, above the series is presented and below we find the different bar codes.
