Here is the GeForce RTX 2060 12 GB, a Russian modder created it before NVIDIA

Not happy with having handcrafted memory doubled to cards like the RTX 2070, 3070 and 2080 Ti, the Russian youtuber On VIK he decided to embark on another very similar project by putting his hands (or rather, the tip of the soldering iron) on the GeForce RTX 2060.

NVIDIA’s card, which is normally equipped with 6GB of GDDR6, has therefore been modified to work with 12 GB of memory. The funny thing is that a RTX 2060 with 12 GB will really hit the market in the coming weeks, at least according to rumors (we are talking about December 7).

For his experiment the modder used chips made from a notebook, with double the capacity (Samsung K4ZAF325BM-HC14 from 2 GB) and the same data rate of 14 Gbps. Once the replacement work was completed, the card (an Asus RTX 2060 Turbo) was correctly recognized by software such as GPU-Z, certifying the presence of 12288 MB available to the GPU.

A fact that is not entirely obvious, in fact the GPUs only support certain VRAM chips selected by the manufacturer and compatibility information is not always disseminated, which is why these mods are rare.

Tested, the “handcrafted” GeForce RTX 2060 12 GB performed well, except for occasional black screens that we shouldn’t see with the official NVIDIA card. The bug, however, common in all VIK-on projects, and can be circumvented by setting the GPU in performance mode from the NVIDIA Control Panel.

As for the performance, the results in the mining of Ethereum and the Unigine Superposition test showed no marked differences compared to the model with 6 GB of memory. It is clear that the simple increase in memory will not affect the performance too much, except in some situations where the greater VRAM will actually be used. In short, it will depend a lot on the game or the software.

The GeForce RTX 2060 12GB expected in the coming weeks it should therefore not change the market equilibrium, but its arrival will mainly serve NVIDIA to better address the shortage and meet the demands of partners.

The Turing GPU on board the card manufactured at 12 nanometers by TSMC, and this should guarantee stable and good production. We imagine the RTX 2060 12 GB as a card aimed primarily at system builders for the creation of desktop gaming PCs. However, the card should also hit the retail market, aimed at those who are content with playing well at 1080p.
