The US and Japan are targeting hypersonic missiles, and no wonder

A few years ago, the world was simpler when hypersonic missiles remained solely in the conceptual and design realm. Today, however, they are a reality that terrifies us because of the inability to combat them with the current anti-missile systems by the speed and trajectory of these missiles. It is no wonder then that the countries cooperating since the end of World War II (the US and Japan) have joined forces to try to eliminate the threat posed by hypersonic missiles.

Hypersonic missiles are a huge threat. No wonder the US and Japan have joined forces to fight them

All militarily-minded countries, to which both China and North Korea belong, deal with the development of hypersonic weapons. It is these two that the United States and Japan are most worried about. Hence the announcement of a new agreement made earlier this month, which will include working together to develop “artificial intelligence, machine learning, directed energy and quantum computing” and, above all, the “anti-hypersonic technology” that interests us today.

The joint agreement on research into strategies to counteract these weapons is not entirely surprising, but unfortunately we do not know the details. We only know that it is a manifestation of an attempt to counteract “the rapid and opaque military expansion that threatens the regional strategic balance.” The problem with the missiles currently being developed by North Korea and China is huge, because even one could lead to a catastrophe if it bypassed the current anti-ballistic systems and destroyed them, paving the way for other missiles.
