3 solutions for when camera doesn’t work on Windows 10 PC
Having trouble taking photos or making video calls on your Windows 10 computer because the webcam isn’t working? We have listed some possible solutions in this guide that will get your PC camera working right away.
First of all, check that the camera is not covered by dust or other foreign materials that could obstruct the vision of the lens. Similarly, for desktops and laptops with a camera slider, make sure the slider is open. Finally, we also recommend that you restart your device before moving on to the solutions below.
A couple of factors could change the permissions, this causes the Windows camera or webcam to fail, and other camera dependent apps / services also fail. Computer recoveryfor example, it may disable camera permission for some apps. Also bring the PC back to a restore point would produce the same result.
In this case, we recommend that you check your device’s camera permissions and make sure everything is set up correctly.
You need to control the apps that have access to the PC camera via the Windows Camera app on the same camera settings page. Scroll through the Microsoft Store apps list and make sure the apps you need have access to the camera.
Finally, you should also grant non-Microsoft third-party apps access to your PC’s camera. Enable the option that says “Allow desktop apps to access your camera”.
Now launch the Windows Camera app or the apps you are trying to use the camera with and see if it works.
Resetting the Windows camera default app can also fix PC camera problems. Follow the steps below to do that. However, before proceeding, we recommend that you terminate (read: close) the app and its processes. If nothing changes, reset it.
Note: Resetting the camera app will delete its data (eg Image storage location, image / video quality settings, etc.). The images and videos saved in the camera roll will not be deleted.
Your Windows computer’s camera won’t work if the camera driver is disabled, out of date, or incompatible with your PC. Here are some troubleshooting solutions that will fix the driver issues responsible for camera malfunctions on your Windows computer.
This will update Device Manager and enable the PC camera driver.
If your Windows PC camera still does not work after enabling the camera driver, you can try to update the driver.
This will require Windows to scour the internet and your computer for the latest camera driver available for your PC.
If a new / updated driver version is found, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install it on your computer. Restart your computer afterwards to complete the driver update process.
If you have noticed that your device’s camera has stopped working after a recent update of operating system or driver, try to roll back the driver to the previous version. The newly installed driver may be faulty or incompatible with your computer.
If the option is greyed out on your computer, it means you haven’t updated the camera driver.
In addition to the possible solutions listed above, Microsoft recommends that you temporarily disable antivirus software if you have one installed on your PC. Some antivirus configurations may compromise the privacy and permission settings of the camera.
If you have tried the troubleshooting solutions mentioned above, but to no avail, the problem may be hardware related. You must visit a certified technician or the PC manufacturer’s service / repair center to have your computer checked for possible hardware damage.
