In October last year, we learned that a competitor for the world’s largest offshore wind turbine is already emerging. We are talking about the Chinese wind turbine MySE 16.0-242, which exceeds the energy potential of the 14-megawatt Haliade-X 14 from GE. Today we have new information on this subject, as regards the use of these turbines in practice.

MingYang Smart Energy will install two MySE 16.0-242 wind turbines with a capacity of 16 MW each at the MingYang Yangjiang Qingzhou Four offshore wind farm in the South China Sea. Thus, these two giant wind turbines will join the former 59 8 MW turbines on the 505.2 MW wind farm, which is slated to go into operation by 2026.

MingYang Smart Energy, based in Zhongshan, China, is currently building its largest offshore wind turbine yet, MySE 16.0-242. When this 242-meter giant is launched, it will be able to generate the entire 16 megawatts of power, providing access to green, free energy for as many as 20,000 households over 25 years of operation. This will eliminate over 1.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

A single MySE 16.0-242 turbine will generate 90 million kWh of electricity per year, 45% more than its predecessor, the MingYang MySE 11.0-203. No wonder, because when it starts operating, its three 118-meter-long blades will cover an area of ​​46,000 square meters.

However, before this happens, some time will pass, because the prototype is to start operating in 2022, the installation on site is to take place in the first half of 2023, and the most important stage of commercial production in the first half of 2024. However, we can be sure that this is just the beginning of the expansion of wind turbines. We will probably keep you informed about even larger projects for a long time, because the bigger the wind turbine is, the more energy it generates, so its cost in relation to energy drops significantly.
