Accidents on electric scooters are terrifying compared to other forms of transport

There will only be more accidents involving electric ‘last mile’ vehicles. This has its reason, of course, because the number of their users is growing and only in the case of scooters alone, it amounts to millions. However, how accidents on electric scooters compare to other forms of transport is a bit scary.

It looks like accidents with electric scooters are more common than with bicycles or even motorbikes

A study published in 2021 entitled “Electric Scooter-Related Injuries: A New Epidemic in Orthopedics” found that of the 397 patients admitted to the emergency department within 12 months, only 19 were wearing helmets at the time of the accident. Twenty-five percent of the cases required surgery, which is not surprising given other reviews that estimated that in 2021 every 100,000 trips resulted in 20-25 emergency room visits.

A new study by UCLA compared data from different forms of transport based on 1,354 victims of electric scooter accidents between 2014 and 2020 who required outpatient treatment in Los Angeles. According to calculations, the scooter injury rate was approximately 175-200 times higher than the motor vehicle injury rate for the entire state or county.

According to these estimates, for every million trips on electric scooters, 115 resulted in an injury, of which for cars the number drops to 8, bicycles to 15 and motorcycles to 104. Due to the speed of scooters, the consequences of accidents were not as serious as in the case of motorcycles, but according to researchers, the results are still underestimated (to the detriment of scooters).
