AMD Announces Radeon Pro VII for Workstations, Bridges for Multi-GPU Return

Looking to compete against the Nvidia Quadro RTX 5000, AMD Announced Its New Radeon Pro VII Workstation-Oriented, with the curious return of the bridges for multi-GPU connections that AMD had removed several generations ago as unnecessary.

The graph is based on Vega 20 at 7nm and has 3840 Stream Processors, 240 TMUs, and 64 ROPs, accompanied by 16GB of HBM2 memory connected via a 4096 bit bus. It is 100% designed for workstations, using a blower and having its power connectors on the back.

Just like Nvidia does with its Quadro, this Radeon Pro VII unlocks the full FP32 power that Vega 20 offers, offering a 1: 2 ratio versus FP16, and not 1: 4 like Radeon VII. In this way, it offers an FP32 computation capacity of 6.55TFLOPs compared to the 3.36TFLOPs of the Radeon VII.

The other new feature compared to Radeon VII is the new Infinity Fabric Bridge, which allows you to create links between GPUs of up to 42GB / s in each direction. This particular chart supports two bidirectional links, supporting 84GB / s for each link and therefore a total of 168GB / s when adding your two links. For comparison, a PCI-E 4.0 x16 offers a maximum bandwidth of 64GB / s, so there is a big difference when using this new Infinity Fabric connection.

Comparison vs. Quadro RTX 5000

The difference varies a lot depending on the test, since in some tests they have practically the same performance, while in others the new Radeon Pro VII reaches up to double what the Quadro RTX 5000 does. In addition, this Radeon Pro VII is Much cheaper, costing US $ 1800 compared to US $ 2400 for the Quadro RTX 5000.

Not everything is rosy for AMD: Nvidia's graphics offers hardware Ray-Tracing support and Tensor Cores for artificial intelligence, two points that AMD's graphics do not have. It will be necessary to see for which tasks we want it, and there to see which option is more convenient, although without a doubt AMD has made a breakthrough with this new Radeon Pro VII.
