AMD regains market share from Nvidia

Graphics maker AMD has long had a third of the graphics card market while Nvidia accounted for the rest, but this has changed over the past year. This summer, it emerged that AMD lost significantly to its arch-rival, which accounted for as much as 82 percent of all graphics cards delivered during the second quarter.

A new report from Jon Peddie Research shows that AMD has climbed the margin. Today, the company holds 18.8 percent of the market, which at the same time means that Nvidia continues to dominate with no less than 81.2 percent. However, the distribution between the partners is only one side of the coin.

The same analysis claims that deliveries of graphics cards increased by 27.59 percent from the second quarter of the year, a real boost that can be attributed to manufacturers building up their stocks for Christmas shopping. For AMD, this means that deliveries increased by 33.3 percent and for Nvidia 26.4 percent.

The report also suggests that gaming computers continue to defy a general downturn in the PC market. As a whole, deliveries of personal computers fell by 8.9 per cent compared with the same period last year, compared with only 3.9 per cent for the dedicated graphics cards.
