AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs will not support DDR4 memory, they will only support DDR5 memory

Those who are waiting for the launch of AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs to upgrade or move to AMD with a new PC, it seems that they will have to invest a little more in DDR5 memory. According to sources, the platforms used by AMD’s new product line will not support older memory formats.

“We have confirmed through multiple sources that the X670 and B650 AM5 platforms will only support DDR5 memory,” Tom’s Hardware said. With that, all systems based on Zen 4 processors would have to make the mandatory transition to DDR5, which is still relatively more expensive compared to DDR4 memory.

It also appears that the new Ryzen 7000 processors use a chiplet-based design on AM5 motherboards, which means that some models must rely on two chipset arrays, that is, there are two chips inside, which can be two AMD B650 chips, thus quickly and easily doubling the connectivity options on high-end motherboards.

While AMD’s decision should allow for better use of CPU capacity, it may represent a disadvantage relative to Intel’s Raptor Lake line, which should support both DDR4 and DDR5 memory, although the company advises adopting the latest technology for obtain maximum performance.

As we already mentioned, AMD has announced that the AM5 platform will support PCIe 5.0 technologies and the DDR5 interface, but has not confirmed if support for DDR4 will emerge as an option. According to sources consulted by Tom’s Hardware, it is not yet clear if the controllers of the Ryzen 7000 line are compatible with the previous format, if that happens, a line of compatible motherboards is not ruled out.

All this seems unlikely, it is true that the prices of DDR5 memory are still high, but as the adoption of the new technology advances, we will have better prices, the demand should encourage manufacturers to increase their offers.

From what we know the first Ryzen 7000 CPUs will arrive in late 2022.
