AMD “Trinidad” replaces the Radeon R9 270 series

In the next few months, it’s time again for Nvidia and AMD to battle for the performance throne with two huge graphics processors. Further down the hierarchy is the lucrative middle class, which after a couple of years will be quietly updated with the Nvidia Geforce GTX 960 soon.

Now the Chinese VR-Zone reports that AMD does not intend to let Nvidia ravage undisturbed in the important segment for very long. Already in March, the company is said to be ready to counter with the graphics processor “Trinidad”, which replaces the aging Curacao in Radeon R9 270 and R9 270X. Curacao was formerly known as Pitcairn and was used in HD 7870 and HD 7850, which were introduced in March 2012.

In terms of specifications, Trinidad is said to be equipped with a 256-bit memory bus and 2 GB GDDR5 – on a par with the Curacao-based Radeon R9 270 and R9 270X. It is not clear how many stream processors are housed in Trinidad, nor what architecture it is, but it is no big deal that it is probably a refreshed version of Graphics Core Next (GCN).

Interestingly, Trinidad is said to be manufactured on a 28-nanometer technology, which strengthens the information that AMD jumps over 20 nanometers and immediately goes down to 14/16 nanometers at a later time.
