AMD unveils official Radeon HD 7990

Already with the introduction of the first graphics cards in the Radeon HD 7000 series, AMD promised at least one model with dual graphics processors. This variant went by the code name New Zealand, but the graphics card took a long time and Nvidia’s launch of the Geforce GTX 690 will reportedly force AMD back to the drawing board. However, this has not stopped partner manufacturers such as Asus and PowerColor from releasing their own variants with dual Tahiti XT.

At the Game Developers Conference (GDC), AMD shows what is officially a Radeon HD 7990, but this time the code name “Malta” is used. The exact specifications are not revealed, however, but it is probably about two Tahiti XT and 3 GB GDDR5 memory per graphics circuit – very similar to the Radeon HD 7990 on the market today.

The circuit board is hidden by a large cooler with several heat pipes and three fans, which are said to result in a low noise level in this context. The power supply uses two 8-pin PCI Express connectors, which enables a maximum power output of 375 watts. The graphics card, which measures about 30 centimeters in length, is also equipped with four Mini Displayports and a single DVI.

The official Radeon HD 7990 is expected to appear in connection with the electronics fair Computex in early June.
