AMD's chief technology officer confirms more Radeon graphics cards in 2019

Somewhat unexpectedly, AMD announced the Radeon VII (7) during CES. The graphics card is based on the Vega architecture and is the first to be manufactured at 7 nanometers for consumers. With a full 16 GB of HBM2 memory in 1 TB / s, it takes up the fight against Nvidia’s latest Geforce RTX 2080 in the performance segment.

This is only the first 7-nanometer product from AMD, which has chosen to invest heavily in the new manufacturing technology from TSMC. In a conversation with the financial magazine The Street, Mark Papermaster, chief technology officer at AMD, says that the Radeon VII is only the beginning of the graphics card news for the year. In connection with this, Papermaster says that they are “excited” to start the year in the top tier and that more details about the company’s product plans are to be expected during the year.

The fact that Papermaster emphasizes that Radeon VII is a top card during the year may mean that the next generation has the middle segment in focus, similar to how they with Polaris clearly chose not to take up the fight for the performance throne. The next generation Radeon graphics card from AMD has the code name Navi and is also manufactured at 7 nanometers. It is still shrouded in obscurity whether Navi is a sixth and final iteration of the over eight-year-old architecture Graphics Core Next (GCN) or whether it is a completely new creation.
