AMD’s power suite Fidelity FX is coming to Xbox

AMD launched its effects suite Fidelity FX in 2019 and since then, about 40 game titles have built in some form of support on PC. In total, the suite offers eight, soon nine, technologies of various kinds that aim to improve quality or increase performance. During this year’s edition of Game Stack Live, Microsoft announces that three features from the Fidelity FX suite will now be available on Xbox, free for all developers.

First out is Contrast Adaptive Sharpening, which is a sharpening filter that is usually used in connection with upscaling from lower resolutions. Variable Shading is AMD’s name for Variable Rate Shading, which reduces precision in shaders in the areas of the image where it is less visible. And finally we have Raytraced Shadow Denoiser which just as the name suggests is an algorithm to minimize noise in shadows generated by ray tracing.

The advantages of making the suite available are not so much that the technology itself is unique but that the solutions are free and allow developers to invest resources in other things if they choose to use AMD’s standardized technologies. Like its PC counterparts, it is open source that is free for developers to modify.

Whether other parts of Fidelity FX will be available for Xbox and whether there are plans to also offer the technology for Playstation remains to be seen. The hope shared by many that if more console game developers start using the technology, it should mean even broader support on the PC front as well.

Do you use any of the Fidelity FX features through AMD’s control panel or directly in games?
