Bild: Shopping centers in Germany turn off escalators to save energy

BERLIN, 27 Aug – PRIME. In Germany, a number of shopping centers have begun turning off escalators in order to save electricity, the tabloid Bild reported.

Thus, shutdowns are observed in the shopping centers of the Saturn network, as well as in the department stores of the Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof network, the newspaper notes.
“In the areas of lighting and escalators, we are already saving energy by switching off wherever possible without causing inconvenience to customers,” department store chain Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof said in a statement.
Shopping giant ECE is also turning off escalators “early in the morning and in the evening hours,” the newspaper writes. The possibility of turning off escalators “and other energy-saving measures” is also being studied at IKEA, a spokesman for the chain said.
Due to problems with the supply of Russian gas in Germany, they do not exclude an energy collapse in winter. Economics Minister Robert Habek and the head of the Federal Grid Agency, Klaus Müller, have repeatedly called on fellow citizens to reduce their electricity consumption in order to save money.
