Blackmagic Design launches external graphics card dock in collaboration with Apple

The popular ultra-thin laptops are often equipped with relatively powerful processors. When it comes to the graphics part, this is often less impressive, which is partly due to the limited cooling performance that goes hand in hand with the thin format. For more graphics-intensive tasks, external graphics cards have therefore become commonplace, where Gigabyte’s Gaming Box is a variant.

Recently, Apple unveiled the latest cutting-edge Macbook Pro computers, with processors based on the Coffee Lake architecture. In connection with this, the company also presented an external graphics card dock in the form of Blackmagic EGPU, which was developed together with the camera and software maker Blackmagic Design.

The graphics card dock comes with a Radeon Pro 580 card, which offers a base frequency of 1,200 MHz and 8 GB of GDDR5 memory. The graphics card is accompanied by a power supply that can also power the Thunderbolt 3-connected computer with up to 85 watts, while the maximum power consumption of the device is specified at 315 watts.

Blackmagic EGPU offers two monitor connections in the form of an HDMI 2.0 and a Thunderbolt 3. In addition, there are three USB 3.1 type A. The device is supported by computers with Thunderbolt 3 and Mac OS 10.13.6 or later, but Blackmagic Design believes that there are no barriers to use with Windows / PC.

The external graphics card is available through Apple’s online store and has a price tag of SEK 7,549.
