Food company Danone has launched Track & Connect, a blockchain solution for tracking food and baby products. It will provide greater transparency for its baby food brands, including the Aptamil powder milk line.
The service has already been launched in China and will be extended this year to France, Germany, Australia and New Zealand.
China’s choice for launch was not just about the size of the market. In this country there have been several public scandals about children’s food. For example, in 2008, six babies died from kidney stones, and 54,000 were hospitalized after large quantities of melamine were found in powdered milk.
Danone products will include two barcodes to protect consumers. The one on the outside of the package shows when the product was made and his journey to the store. Another barcode is laser-printed behind a resilient seal and can only be scanned after purchase.
This confirms the authenticity and, if the same code has already been scanned, will trigger an alert.
This measure has been implemented to prevent counterfeiting.
Blockchain for food tracking implemented by several manufacturers
Danone has not yet confirmed what blockchain is using for the new system, but the company is a SAP customer. SAP launched the blockchain-as-a-service Leonardo service in June 2018 and since December it has been used by Coca Cola.
Several other baby food and milk manufacturers are already using blockchain for food tracking. Nestlé and Carrefour track products using the IBM Food Trust blockchain. An Italian subsidiary of Kraft Heinz, Plasmon, is exploring baby food blockchain in association with the local ministry of agriculture. And TE-FOOD follows the organic infant formula for Vietnam’s largest milk company, Vinamilk.
