Browser fingerprinting – a new stage of BRAVE development

Amprentarea browserului

Since its launch in 2016, the Brave browser has built methods to improve online privacy. For this reason, it has attracted millions of users around the world who want to surf the internet privately without being suffocated by advertisements.

Brave launched in March a new stage of browser development, which prevents tracking online activity through the so-called “fingerprint”.

Browser fingerprint

Browser fingerprinting is a technique for identifying and tracking people on the Web by combining several semi-identifiers (things that differ slightly depending on each person’s browser, such as browser window size or computer hardware details) and combining them into a single, unique identifier.

For example, a site may have many French readers and many Linux users, but a small percentage use both options at the same time. By combining several such semi-identifiers, sites can identify and track a large percentage of users.

Most other browsers try to reduce the number of possible values for these semi-identifying features. For example, instead of specifying that a user prefers ‘Australian English’ or ‘British English’, the browser might just report ‘English’ to reduce how language preferences are identified.

Brave opted for a different approach – instead of trying to make everyone look the same, the fingerprint defenses upgrades try to make everyone look different, for each website, for each session. Basically, a user will look different on each site visited, which means that the sites cannot use the fingerprint to track him.

The first stage of these changes is called “farbling” and some parts have already been implemented on the Nightly a Brave test version.

The system is under development and is expected to be completed in the “next few months”.

Meanwhile, Brave has reached the first place among all browser applications in Japan and is ranked tenth in the category of “top” applications in the country on the Google PlayStore.
