On paper, COBRA (COunter Battery RAdar) radars are an impressive piece of equipment carried on a vehicle from which it can operate directly. Advanced software algorithms automatically compensate for the slope of the terrain (radar slope and roll) and calculate the height of each search beam so that it passes the radar horizon before transmitting.

COBRA was developed jointly by Thales, Airbus Defense and Space and Lockheed Martin for the German armed forces, the French and British armies. It is considered the world’s most advanced land-based weapon locating system, tasked with locating mortars, rocket launchers and artillery batteries and providing information to counter their effectiveness.

With a detection range of up to 100 km, COBRA is able to locate and classify up to 40 batteries within two minutes. It will also be able to monitor ceasefire violations when deployed as part of peacekeeping operations.
