Starting Friday, Amazon Prime will broadcast the documentary “Banking on Africa: The Bitcoin Revolution”, made by South African filmmaker Tamarin Gerriety. This material was sponsored by the crypto exchange Luno and illustrates how cryptocurrencies have changed the lives of Africans.
Among the personalities included in the documentary are Alakanani Itireleng, the founder of SatoshiCentre in Botswana and the Monero developer in South Africa, Riccardo Spagni.
Demand for Bitcoin is growing across Africa
According to data published by Paxful and LocalBitcoins. Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and Ghana have the fastest growing cryptocurrency users on the continent.
A January 2020 report by market research firm DataReportal estimated that 11% of Nigerians and 13% of internet users in South Africa under the age of 64 use cryptocurrencies.
By comparison, the overall average is 7%. For this reason, there have been numerous educational initiatives on cryptocurrencies, and local exchanges report intense activity.
A survey conducted by GlobalWebIndex in 2018 showed that the demand for Bitcoin is growing. About 10.7 percent of Internet users in South Africa have purchased Bitcoin.
