EK Water Blocks takes walnut wood for Geforce RTX 3000 cooling

Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 3000 series “Ampere” raises the performance bar considerably compared to older cards, but it also comes with higher power output – despite switching from TSMC’s 12 to Samsung’s 8-nanometer technology. For those who have managed to pinch a high-performance graphics card, the answer to the latter problem is a porky air cooler, but customized water cooling is another option.

Well-reputed EK Water Blocks have been providing water blocks for “Ampere” for several months now, where double-sided models for cooling the memory circuits of the Geforce RTX 3090 may stand out a little extra. Aesthetically, these are high-gloss variants in nickel or copper, in the company of RGB-equipped models with transparent plexiglass or black acetal plastic. With the Lignum series, it is now also possible to decorate the cooling system with a walnut accent.

EK Water Blocks is no stranger to water blocks with a wooden top and the Lignum series looked forward to 2019, with products for processors and Geforce RTX 2080 Ti. The new product promises compatibility with most RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 models using Nvidia’s circuit board reference design. However, the Founders Edition cards with V-shaped circuit boards do not follow this design.

The cooling block is basically a model belonging to the EK Water Blocks Quantum Vector series and the product’s contact surface of copper reaches the graphics circuit, memory and power supply. The top of walnut wood spills over to the connections on the side, but also to the two G1 / 4-inch connections that come with it. The manufacturer promises that the wooden details have room to contract and expand, and that they have no contact with water.

The water block also comes with a black aluminum cover plate, which takes up space on the back. It can be added that it is this cover plate that is visible if the graphics card is mounted horizontally directly in a PCI Express connection, so those who are interested in making wood visible in the computer should look at standing mounting. The product can be pre-ordered through the manufacturer’s online store, at the juicy price of 368 euros, corresponding to close to 3,800 kronor. Deliveries start in September.
