Energoatom claims that the fifth power unit of ZNPP is connected to the grid

MOSCOW, Sep 2 — PRIME. The Ukrainian “Energoatom” claims that the fifth power unit of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which was turned off the day before due to shelling, is again connected to the power grid, so two power units are operating at the plant.

“Power unit No. 5 of the Zaporizhzhya NPP, which was turned off yesterday morning as a result of another mortar shelling of the Zaporozhye NPP site, was connected to the power grid at 13.10 (coincides with Moscow time), the power increase continues. Now the station has two power units that generate electricity for the needs of Ukraine. Comments to the operation of equipment and security systems,” Energoatom said in a Telegram channel.

Earlier on Friday, the head of the administration of the Zaporozhye region, Yevhen Balitsky, said that one power unit remains in operation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, delivering 60% of the capacity.

Zaporozhye NPP is located on the left bank of the Dnieper near the town of Energodar. This is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe in terms of the number of units and installed capacity – the plant has six power units with a capacity of 1 gigawatt each. Since March, it has been under the protection of the Russian military. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation emphasized the justification for the Russian military to take under the protection of the power plant in terms of preventing leaks of nuclear and radioactive materials. The Ukrainian military continues to regularly shell Energodar, the surrounding villages and the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant adjacent to the city.
