Europe may be left without mobile communications, Reuters reported

MOSCOW, 29 Sep — PRIME. European countries are at risk of losing mobile communications due to the energy crisis this winter, Reuters reported, citing sources.

Only 5% of power was restored in Cuba after the hurricane

Mobile phones across Europe could go offline this winter if power cuts or rationing affect parts of mobile networks across the region.

Carriers such as Nokia and Ericsson are working with governments to make sure the authorities have a plan in place to secure critical services, according to the agency. But Europe, “accustomed to uninterruptible power for decades”, does not have enough backup systems to cope with a massive power outage.

As Lisa Bellulo, president of the French Federation of Telecom Operators, noted to Reuters, countries in the region “may be somewhat spoiled in large parts of Europe where electricity is supplied steadily.” Due to insufficient investment, Paris, in particular, will not be able to provide all the country’s antennas with new batteries.
