Fast and free defragmentation tool

There are quite a few disk defragmenters out there, some better, some worse, but too many to choose a clear leader. We decided to take a test drive! Defragmenting one disk using different programs will help us identify the real leaders.

There are both commercial and free tools. For example, the recently updated Vista defragmenter. Having tested it, we can say that it is far from perfect, there are a number of serious problems. But this does not mean that it is very bad, it just has better options.

Free software Quicksys, which has recently been called DiskDefrag, has added to the list of free programs. So far, it is still in beta version, so you can not hope for a convenient interface, but the program is quite suitable for work and does a good job with its task.

DiskDefrag wants to make a free program, a standard defragmenter, adding a few new features. The interface is very simple, you will see a list of all disks available in the system, including flash drives and cds.

At the top of the program there are two standard defragmenter buttons: analyze and start defragmentation. There is an additional function to optimize the disk by working on free space. In fact, this is a serious novelty on the market. Even if you do not need optimization, but just need a simple and high-quality defragmentation, it is best to use DiskDefrag. Moreover, by installing this program you will receive a number of additional functions that are not needed only at first glance.

The list of available drives displays additional information, such as the stability of the file system, total capacity, and the amount of free space (this information is also displayed as a percentage).

At the bottom of the program window there is information about the clusters, how the disk organized the distribution of information across these clusters and the number of blocked files. Additionally, there is also information about the history of changes in system clusters, all information is provided in a very convenient form.

Additionally, you can set priorities for the program processes: low, normal and high, you can also set to ignore some files, for example, if the file size is more than several GB, then we ignore it to save time.

DiskDefrag will automatically analyze your disks, if it is not prohibited in the settings. After a thorough analysis, you will see a lot of information, and by it you will already judge whether you should defragment or not. All analysis material is presented in a very convenient form. All information is stored until the next analysis. During our testing, the analysis took very little time, which is good news. However, the estimated defragmentation time was not entirely accurate.

For the test, we took a 2 GB disk, its defragmentation took a little over a minute. At the same time, the program did its job very well.

DiskDefrag is a very convenient and high-quality tool, and at the same time it is free, which is very important. Defragmentation takes place in many ways, including cluster processing. The speed of the program is amazing, it really works very quickly. There is an additional disk optimization function. Despite the beta version of the program, DiskDefrag shows good results. It remains only to wait a little for the full version, which should be generally one of the best tools in its category, and possibly become a leader!
