France draws very little from EU funds for blockchain

Of the 170 million euros paid by the European Commission in favor of projects blockchain, only 6.2 million went to French actors. Germany is less timid with almost 20 million euros.

Too complex the procedure of the European Commission to benefit from the funds available for the benefit of blockchain projects? Since 2018, an envelope of 340 million euros has been mobilized by the Commission through the Blockchain Observatory and Forum.

According to the data compiled by the JDN, Those are 170 million euros that have been paid to date for the funding 43 projects in this technological field. And French research projects have benefited very little or requested this European aid.

Cybersecurity, the first beneficiary of European aid

The France ranks 7e position of the beneficiary countries with 6.2 million euros collected for the benefit of 19 organizations. However, a non-EU member state like Israel has received an envelope of 5.6 million. But it is European countries that have drawn the most from these funds mobilized by the Commission.

Germany is the first of these with 19.9 million euros, ahead of Spain (19.8), Greece (17.3) and the United Kingdom (17). On a sectoral level, and it is perhaps a surprise, these are projects related to cybersecurity which have been the most funded by Europe.

The cybersecurity thus represents 26% of the amounts allocated. Next come theInternet of things at 22% (presented as a natural complement to blockchain in sectors such as food and medical) and health (19%).

As our colleagues note, the blockchain projects the best endowed by the European Commission are thus Stop-It, which deals with cybersecurity of critical water infrastructures, Amable (additive manufacturing), and iReceptor, focused on personalized medicine and immunotherapy.

None of these projects is therefore French. However, political ambitions in the blockchain do not miss. For Bpifrance, France has nothing to be ashamed of in this area.

In research, work is progressing nonetheless. The National Research Institute for Digital Science and Technology (Inria) and the Parisian laboratory Nomadic Labs have recently signed a framework agreement to support research on blockchain technology.
