“FSR implementation goes on any single day”

With the latest generation of graphics cards from both AMD and Nvidia, there is enough performance to drive ray tracingfeatures, 4K UHD resolution and large doses of eye candy – but not necessarily all parts at once if a higher frame rate is desired. Scaling techniques come in here, which allow the game to be rendered in a lower resolution and then enlarged, preferably with minimal losses in image quality.

Nvidias Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) has a couple of years on its neck and can with Geforce RTX-labeled hardware use the Tensor cores and machine learning to achieve a good result. Yesterday, AMD rolled out the DLSS challenger Fidelity FX Super Resolution (FSR), which emphasizes that the feature does not require special hardware. FSR is also said to have a relatively simple process for being built into games, which is partly attributed to its open source code. Now game developers describe this simplicity in more concrete terms.

Terminator: Reistance is based on a custom version of Unreal Engine 4, so we were a bit worried that it might complicate integration. Luckily, FSR is open-source, so we were able to merge it with our internal engine changes. It took maybe a day to implement with the engine, and then some time to add a new option to UI. We didn’t need to make any tweaks, it just worked.

On AMD’s Youtube channel, developers behind the early FSR games talk about their first impressions of the technology. Among these is Teyon who works with Terminator: Resistance, where technology manager Mateusz Makowiec explains that the FSR implementation went smoothly, even though the game uses a special variant of Unreal Engine 4. Makowiec says that it took a single day to get FSR into the game engine, and some more time to add parts to the user interface. In other respects, he believes that fine-tuning was not needed.

The Youtube channel also includes Forspoken creator Luminous Productions, Exor Studios with The Riftbreaker, Kingshunt developer Vaki Games, Rebellion which builds FSR support into Evil Genius 2 and finally Counterplay Games which develops Godfall, the blade from the mouth. Strengths such as better game performance and smooth implementation hail closely in these short videos.

Is there any heavyweight title that you hope will get FSR support in the future?
