Geforce GTX 680 is transformed into GTX 770 with firmware update

There will be no new graphics processors but new graphics cards when Nvidia launches the first models in the Geforce GTX 700 series. At the end of the month, the flagship Geforce GTX 780 with the giant circuit GK110 will be released. This is followed by the Geforce GTX 770 with the GK104, which is recognizable from the GTX 680, among other things.

A Reddit user is now causing a stir in the hardware world by sharing software that is said to turn a Geforce GTX 680 into an upcoming GTX 770. This includes a firmware update to the graphics card and an INF file for the Geforce Drivers 320.00 driver.

In practice, however, it is only a firmware with higher clock frequencies than in the standard version. The graphics processor is screwed up to 1,059 MHz (1,125 MHz boost), the memories get a boost to 7.0 GHz while the INF file renames the graphics card to the Geforce GTX 770. The changes do not give access to any new features or other benefits.

Although Nvidia can resort to similar tricks in the Geforce GTX 770, at the same time it is far from all Geforce GTX 680 that can handle these clock frequencies.
