The Maxwell architecture is on its way to the higher performance classes. This autumn, the launch of the Geforce GTX 800 series will take place, with the new GM204 graphics processor at the center. The first real sign of life is a bunch of screenshots that are said to describe the Geforce GTX 870 – the successor to today’s GK104-based Geforce GTX 770.

Chinese Coolaler publishes specifications and performance figures that are said to originate from a computer system with an early copy of the Geforce GTX 870 under the hood. In 3DMark 11, the newcomer manages to achieve 11,919 and 4,625 points at the settings Performance respective Extreme, which is more or less on a par with today’s Geforce GTX 780.
According to GPU-Z, the new graphics card contains 1,664 CUDA cores with 4 GB of memory on a 256-bit memory bus. The graphics processor’s clock frequencies amount to 1,051 and 1,178 MHz at base respective boost. The memory spins at 7,012 MHz GDDR5, which provides an effective bandwidth of 224 gigabytes per second, much like the Geforce GTX 770.
It should be added, however, that even if the screenshots are genuine, there is a risk that the GPU-Z interprets incorrect values and thus reports incorrect numbers as the Geforce GTX 870 is not yet included in the internal database. The model name D17U-20 is only an identification string in the drivers, as is the circuit 13C2.
The launch of the Geforce GTX 870 and the sibling GTX 880 is expected to take place in early September.
