GeForce RTX 4000 well over 450W for the top of the range? We are talking about 800-850W

NVIDIA should present the new ones GeForce RTX 4000 architecture-based Ada Lovelace a Septembertwo years after the first RTX 3000 solutions. According to leakers Greymon55 and Kopite7Kimi there are few doubts about the arrival times of the new gaming GPUs of the US company, while there is a lot uncertainty regarding energy demands.

The new GPUs are expected to be manufactured by TSMC with production process a 5 nanometers, but this progress compared to Samsung’s 8 nanometers may not be enough to keep consumption at acceptable levels. In fact, the two leakers speak of consumption between 450 and 800 / 850Wwhich frankly seems excessive and even frightens us a little.

Kopite7Kimi points out that his source is 50% credible (in other words, he takes us or does not take us) and talks about TGP di 450, 600 e 800W for what should be the 4080, 4080 Ti and 4090 models, all based on GPUs AD102. Greymon55 speaks of 450, 650 e 850W, but at the moment he has more doubts than certainties. Certainly the fact that two leakers go so far as to talk about TGP’s 800-850W makes us think, and certainly not in the positive.

At the moment the rumors indicate an AD102 GPU with a size of approx 600 mm2 and with a maximum of 18432 CUDA core. As we have had the opportunity to explain several times in the last few weeks, the new video cards will boast a 16-pin connector capable of carrying 600W. Together with the PCI Express slot this should go up to 675W, so an 800-850W model will necessarily require two connectors of that type.

For now it is good to reiterate that it is about a rumor to be taken with pliers, also because there is no news on the presumed performance of future cards. Sure, 18432 CUDA cores would represent + 70% over the GA102’s 10752 we should see on the wait RTX 3090 Ti. A 450W TDP was rumored for that model, so 800W would figure as an almost 80% increase.

The GeForce RTX 4090 is reality (as a joke): here is the quad-GPU that everyone (or almost everyone) dreams of

It is difficult to think that architectural improvements and production process do not have a positive effect, but we do not know the configurations of the boards. In short, it is better to wait for further rumors to get a clearer picture of how the future RTX 4000 will be, both in terms of performance and from an energy point of view.
