GeForce RTX 4080, two versions but same name: NVIDIA’s explanation

After the announcement of the first GeForce RTX 4000 video cards, fans were divided on prices, performance and consumption but also on a no less interesting aspect: the existence of due GeForce RTX 4080, different not only for on-board VRAM but also for the technical specifications of the GPU. Simply put, many fans would have wanted the GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB to be called GeForce RTX 4070 for transparency reasons.

NVIDIApressed on this aspect, tried to explain the reasons which led it to call them both RTX 4080. “The name of GeForce RTX 4080 16 GB and 12 GB is similar to the name of the two versions of RTX 3080 we had in the last generation and others before that. There is a RTX 4080 configuration with 16 GB of memory and a different configuration with 12 GB. One product name, two configurations“.

The company adds that the RTX 4080 12 GB is an “incredible” GPU with performances that surpass the top of the previous generation range and that, thanks to DLSS 3, triples the performance of the RTX 3080 Ti. “We believe it is a great class 80 GPU“, we read in a post aimed at the community.

“We know many gamers may want a premium option, so the 16GB RTX 4080 comes with more memory and even more performance. The two versions they will be clearly identified on the packaging, product details and in stores so that gamers and creators can easily choose the best GPU for themselves. “

Words that will not all agree, even the writer generally prefers “unique” model names, in order to make life easier when buying even for newbies. If only the amount of memory changed, then it could also be accepted, but in the presence of more marked differences we would have preferred another number or a suffix. From the words of NVIDIA, however, it appears that we will have to accept the new reality, whether we like it or not. After all, whether a product is called “Tizio” or “Caio”, in the end simply the performance and the price at which it is offered count.

Recall that the more powerful GeForce RTX 4080 is based on a GPU AD103 con 9728 CUDA core and foresees 16 GB of GDDR6X memory on 256-bit bus. The TGP, on the other hand, is equal to 320W. The other solution has a GPU instead AD104 con 7680 CUDA core and 12 GB of GDDR6X memory on 192-bit bus. As for the TGP, the indicated value is 285W.

Both models will be available from November: la RTX 4080 16 GB a 1479 euro VAT included, the 12 GB solution a 1109 euro VAT included.
