Graphics card ranking 2019: GPU comparison

The purchase advice ranking clarifies which graphics card you should buy based on tests and benchmarks. We recommend the best gaming models in the entry-level, mid-range and high-end classes (from Full HD to 4K). These are the recommendations for December 2019, just in time for Christmas.

The best graphics cards in December 2019

The graphics card is still the most important hardware component in a gaming PC. If you want to play current games, you can hardly avoid it, because the graphics units installed in Intel CPUs and AMD CPUs are usually too slow. AMD’s APU Picasso is also only suitable for gaming to a limited extent – at least if it is supposed to be a great AAA title once in a while.

AMD and Nvidia build modern graphics cards that are sold to players under the names Radeon and GeForce, respectively. In this purchase advice, BitcoinMinersHashrate recommends the best graphics cards for gamers, from entry-level models to high-end products that cost over € 1,000.

Graphics card purchase advice: up to date every month

The current graphics card ranking is revised monthly so that the latest prices and the latest products can always be taken into account. The countless graphics card tests and benchmarks that BitcoinMinersHashrate carries out almost every week serve as the source for the performance comparison ranking and the price-performance ratio. In addition, the large community is available around the clock in word and deed in the sub-forum “Graphics Cards: Purchasing Advice”.

Current graphics card benchmarks

The graphics card comparison shows the performance of all graphics cards recently tested by BitcoinMinersHashrate with the same test system in the resolutions Full HD (1,920 × 1,080), QHD (2,560 × 1,440) and Ultra HD (3,840 × 2,160).

The charts in the leaderboard can be switched through for this purpose. If you don’t want certain games to be included in the average view, you can set this using the “Edit” button. By clicking on “+ XX entries” further elements can be shown. If a graphics card is clicked on in the ranking, it receives the performance index of 100 percent and all other graphics cards in the same diagram are displayed at their speed relative to it. So you can easily understand which performance gain a faster model actually brings.

Which graphics card do I need?

The answer to this question depends primarily on the resolution in which you want to play. The main ones are Full HD (1,920 × 1,080), WQHD (2,560 × 1,440) and Ultra HD (3,840 × 2,160). These are the editors’ recommendations.

Recommendations for Full HD

If you want to play in Full HD resolution and are satisfied with a reduced level of detail, you should currently be looking for at least one Radeon RX 570 (test), which is available from 130 euros. However, it must be clear to every buyer that the performance reserves will then be low, especially for future games. Important: The graphics card is cheaper and faster than the new GeForce GTX 1650 (test) and is therefore always preferable.

If you are looking for a graphics card for Full HD that can reproduce most (future) titles with higher details, you should at least use the GeForce GTX 1660 (test) with 6 GB. From € 215 there are simple models of the graphics card that can score with good energy efficiency, among other things. If that’s too much for you, you should consider the Radeon RX 580 from 159 euros as an alternative. The model is slower and requires significantly more energy, but as compensation there is 8 GB instead of just 6 GB of memory.

If you really want to play carefree in Full HD and also have reserves for future games or now and then for the WQHD resolution (with reduced details), you have to spend a bit more. The GeForce GTX 1660 Super (test) (6 GB) duels here with the Radeon RX Vega 56 (8 GB). The latter is currently quite cheap at 235 euros, but there is only the loud reference design, while quieter models cost at least 300 euros. Therefore, in this case it is advisable to use the Nvidia graphics card, which is a bit slower and only offers 6 instead of 8 GB of memory, but is cheaper and significantly more efficient – in addition, there are only a few copies of the Radeon RX Vega 56 there. The model will soon be completely gone from the market.

There are even more reserves for Full HD in the graphics cards that are required for higher resolutions.

Recommendations for WQHD

For gaming in 2,560 × 1,440, the Radeon RX 5700 (test) based on the retreaded RDNA architecture, which can be bought from € 319, should be considered as an entry. The graphics card is fast, efficient, has a modern architecture, offers 8 GB of memory and there are many different custom designs to buy. However, you have to be willing to switch the level of detail down in some games. The Radeon RX 5700 XT has slightly more power reserves for higher frame rates from 389 euros. With the graphics card, the maximum level of detail can often be displayed smoothly in 2,560 × 1,440. v.l.n.r. Asus Strix OC, MSI Gaming X, PowerColor Red Devil

The GeForce RTX 2070 Super (test) is Nvidia’s competitor model for the currently fastest navigation branch. At 510 euros, however, this costs a good deal more. The graphics card is slightly faster and has ray tracing. Everyone has to decide for themselves whether “RTX” is worth the surcharge – but there are not many games today that support the new features. From the editorial point of view, this should not be a purchase criterion.

Recommendations for Ultra HD

The graphics card cannot be fast enough for Ultra HD, and this also applies to reduced graphics details. A Radeon RX 5700 XT or a GeForce RTX 2070 Super are the bare minimum for current games. Graphics cards of the caliber of a GeForce RTX 2080 (test) or a GeForce RTX 2080 Super (test) are even better. For the graphics cards with 640 euros or 699 euros, a surcharge has to be paid compared to the GeForce RTX 2070 Super, but there is around ten to 15 percent more performance.

The GeForce RTX 2080 Ti (test) is of course an option for Ultra HD. It is extremely expensive with at least 1,072 euros, but it is also clearly the best graphics card on the market. The performance is unmatched, the 11 GB memory is acceptably large and ray tracing can be used properly up to and including WQHD. The model is also well equipped for future games.
