AMD Brings RDNA 2 GPUs to Laptops: Meet Radeon RX 6800M, 6700M and 6600M | Computex 2021

L’AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture at the heart of the Radeon RX 6000 desktop video cards also comes on notebook. The US company announced three dedicated GPUs which respond to the names of Radeon RX 6600M, Radeon RX 6700M e Radeon RX 6800M to ensure high gaming performance and more. AMD’s new GPUs come at a time of great expansion for the gaming notebook sector, with one sales growth of 27% from 2019 to 2020 it is destined to continue also in the months to come.

RDNA 2, according to AMD, represents an important and all-round improvement over the previous series RDNA GPUs: we talk about a performance increase of up to 50% with a decrease in consumption of 43%, while the even greater performance improvement – equal to 77% – in scenarios where it is not possible to exceed a certain level of consumption.

The Radeon RX 6600M wants to ensure gaming performance adequate to Full HD, and a GPU characterized by a TDP up to 100W. We have on board 28 Compute Unit (1792 stream processors) and as many Ray Accelerators (RA) to manage the calculations related to ray tracing. There is no shortage of 32 MB of Infinity Cache. The GPU – able to go to 2177 MHz (Game Clock) – assisted by 8 GB of GDDR6 memory. According to AMD, this model has performance similar to or better than a 6GB RTX 3060 Nvidia in Full HD and maximum details in games like Borderlands 3, DiRT 5 and AC: Valhalla.

The Radeon RX 6700M a bit in the middle ground, that is, depending on the game and the TDP (can be set by OEMs up to 135W) it allows you to play at 1080p or 1440p. AMD talks about 100 FPS at 1440p with high details in popular games – Fortnite and the like. This GPU boasts 36 Compute Unit (2304 stream processors) and as many RAs, integrates 80 MB of Infinity Cache and runs at a Game Clock of 2300 MHz. Next to the GPU you will find well 10 GB of GDDR6 memory.

Finally, the Radeon RX 6800M designed for gaming a 1440p thanks to a TDP of “145W and above”. The GPU matters well 40 Compute Unit and as many Ray Acceleators, which means that there are 2560 stream processors on board, half of a Radeon RX 6900 XT or if you prefer the same as the Radeon RX 6700 XT. The GPU reaches a Game Clock of 2300 MHz, integrates 96 MB of Infinity Cache and flanked by 12 GB of GDDR6 memory.

According to AMD this flagship model, aboard the new ROG Strix G15, offers 40% to 70% better performance than a 2019 notebook with the RTX 2070 in titles like AC Valhalla, Cyberpunk 2077, DiRT 5 and RE: Village at 1440p with maximum details. In general, along dozens of titles, the GPU capable of hitting 120 fps on average at 1440p and maximum details, going from around 60 fps with CB2077 to 417 fps in Valorant.

This performance, again according to AMD, sees the Radeon RX 6800M deliver similar or slightly better performance than Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3080 8GB in titles like AC: Valhalla, Borderlands 3, DiRT 5, COD Black Ops and RE: Village. The gap would be even bigger, between 12% and 40%, playing with notebooks unplugged in titles like CS: GO, Fortnite, DiRT 5 and RE: Village.

We will find these GPUs on board notebooks with Ryzen 5000 CPUsup to Ryzen 9 5900HX. Precisely this combination of CPU and GPU allows AMD to offer two added values: the first Smart Access Memory, technology already seen in the desktop environment and which allows the CPU to access the graphics memory directly and completely (with benefits for the frame rate); The second one SmartShift which allows a dynamic management of the power budget to allow the CPU or GPU to offer better performance depending on the load, whether it is graphics or calculation.
