Hong Kong Independent Newspaper accuses BitPay of blocking account

Founder of the Hong Kong Independent Newspaper (HKFP) Tom Grundi said that the cryptocurrency operator BitPay suddenly stopped transferring donations from patrons to the development of the newspaper.

HKFP began working with BitPay back in 2015 and received very few donations in bitcoins – about $ 1,900. But in the last three weeks the company’s access has been blocked. According to Tom Grundy, it is possible that delays are associated with banking systems, but BitPay technical support does not respond to the newspaper’s requests and complaints.

“Donations are delayed for weeks simply because banks in Hong Kong use the SWIFT system rather than IBAN. Never use bitpay guys. In fact, all the bad things you can imagine are embodied in BitPay: a bad reputation, a disregarding attitude, terrible customer support, and very high commissions. Almost any alternative will be better, ”- wrote
Grundy on Twitter.

Earlier, BitPay stopped providing its services in Germany in connection with the introduction of new rules by the German Federal Financial Supervisory Agency (BaFin). After that, the company tightened
internal customer identification procedures.
