How to turn off the microphone on Android
This article teaches you how to mute your Android smartphone’s microphone and change your microphone settings.
If you want to completely disable the microphone on your Android smartphone, the process is relatively simple but hidden behind some menus. Here’s where to look and how to mute your microphone.
If you only want to mute the microphone in certain apps, choose to toggle them accordingly.
Most Android smartphones are still listening in some way, waiting to hear you activate Google Assistant. If you prefer to disable this feature, here’s what to do.
This process will disable Google Assistant on all phones using the same Google account.
If you want to change which apps can use your microphone on your Android smartphone, the process is very similar to disabling it entirely. This is what you should do.
The microphone on Android smartphones is usually located at the bottom of your phone. Look where you plug your phone in for charging and you will see vents or holes. This is where the microphone resides and where you need to speak to be heard by others or to speak on your phone.
Do not cover the microphone with your hand or fingers when making a call or using the microphone.
It is a common concern that your Android smartphone may spy on you. Although your phone listens for the “Hey Google” message, it doesn’t track what you do or record your calls. However, if you are concerned, you can follow the steps above to mute the microphone as much as possible while still receiving and making calls.
Keep an eye on apps that have access to your microphone for malware threats or malicious sources.
You can also visit Google’s My Activity page to see what Google collects about your browsing habits and the apps you use.
Many third-party apps from the Google Play Store can switch their audio output to your smartphone’s speaker. Consider downloading Headphone Mode Off or search Google Play Store for alternatives.
It is only possible to mute and unmute the microphone if you are on a call. If you’re on a call and want some privacy or need to talk to someone without the other party hearing you, mute your Android smartphone’s microphone by tapping the option. Be quiet in the call action panel. Activate the sound to resume the call.
