Huawei wants to counter NVIDIA in the world of server GPUs

Huawei wants to enter the market GPU, according to the South Korean newspaper The Elec; but his ambitions would concern mainly i cloud and AI markets, therefore server – in other words, do not expect a gaming video card, at least in a short time. Apparently the new division would be being set up right in South Korea, and the company would be recruiting NVIDIA staff, which is the industry leader.

As many will know, GPUs are very important in data centers because they are more specialized than normal CPUs, so in fact they are able to perform certain types of calculation much faster. They are used, among other things, inartificial intelligence training, even though more specialized and efficient chips are coming out lately.

Huawei is already among the protagonists in this particular niche, but growing rapidly: last summer it presented Ascend 910, a 7 nm + processor capable of reaching 256 TFLOPs – about twice what the NVIDIA Tesla V100 12 GPUs total nm. Not only that: about three months ago, Huawei also presented the Kunpeng 920, which is a server CPU based on ARMv8 architecture with 64 cores at 2.6 GHz.
