i7 10700K vs Ryzen 7 3700X: Which is Best? – In recent months we have compared several Intel and AMD processors, you can find them in the buying guides section, and the results of these comparisons have always been favorable to AMD’s Ryzen series: cheaper, more efficient and more futuristic than Intel solutions.
To respond to this unexpected AMD exploit, Intel has recently launched the Comet Lake series processors on the market. Today we compare one of the processors in this new series, the i7 10700K, with the Ryzen 7 3700X, to find out if the AMD processor is still the best in this price range.
i7 10700K | Ryzen 7 3700X | |
Architecture: | Comet Lake | Zen 2 |
Socket: | LGA 1200 | AM4 |
Core: | 8 | 8 |
Threads: | 16 | 16 |
Base frequency: | 3.8 GHz | 3.6 GHz |
Maximum turbo frequency: | 5.1 GHz | 4.4 GHz |
TDP: | 125 W | 65 W |
Overclock: | And | And |
Price: | 401€ | 305€ |
As usual, let’s start the comparison by comparing the data sheets of the two processors: the most obvious differences are the architecture they are based on, Comet Lake for the i7 and Zen 2 for the Ryzen, and the different sockets they support: LGA 1200 the new Intel series and AM4 the Ryzen. Both the i7 10700K and the Ryzen 7 3700X are overclockable, but only the former has an integrated video card, a perhaps unimportant aspect for many but worth pointing out. With the Comet Lake series, Intel has increased the number of cores and threads of its processors in this price range, matching those of the Ryzen 7 3700X. The price difference between these two CPUs is quite marked, but is the performance difference that great too?
Let’s start the comparison between the two processors with Cinebench, a software widely used that there allows you to compare performance of the two CPUs sia in single-thread che in multi-thread. The tests show us an almost equal situation: the i7 10700K narrowly wins in single-thread testing while it has a larger, but still small, advantage in multi-threading.
In this test we are going to observe the performance in compression and decompression on 7-Zip: one of the most used programs for managing compressed files. In the compression test, the i7 turns out to be a little more handsome compared to the AMD processor; in the one on the decompression, we note that the Ryzen 7 manages to disconnect enough the Intel solution.
In the Corona benchmark the i7 10700K manages to detach the Ryzen 7 3700X: the difference is much greater than the other tests, which have given us a situation of substantial parity.
In gaming, Intel products have always fared better than AMD ones and, as you can see in the graph below, even in this case the i7 10700K performs better than its AMD counterpart: the difference, however, is not that great and varies from game to game.
After all these tests, we now come to the final section of the article, that of conclusions. In production tests the i7 10700K proved itself generally higher compared to the Ryzen 7 3700X, but this difference is generally very small, we can therefore speak of more than one parity between these two processors. In gaming, Intel reaffirms itself as the best solution, but even in this case the difference will be noticed almost exclusively by gamers who are looking for the maximum fps and have a very high level GPU.
In conclusion, which one do we recommend between the two? For us, the smartest choice is the Ryzen 7 3700X: despite having a much lower price, it manages to keep up with the i7 10700K both in production tests and in gaming. In this case the Ryzen 7 has a far better performance / price ratio than the i7, which arrives on the market with an excessive price compared to what it offers; for those interested in gaming we recommend, rather than spending € 100 more for a processor, to take a Ryzen 7 3700X and invest more money in the GPU, where you will really see those € 100 more spent. If you are in the world of competitive gaming, and therefore you need the maximum fps, more than the i7 10700K we recommend the i9 10900K: costs more but gives you the maximum possible fps.
To conclude, we leave you below some links from where you can buy both the Ryzen 7 3700X and the i7 10700K at the best price possible.
