Ryzen 9 3900X vs i9-9900K: Which is Best? – Performance in comparison – After comparing the proposals from AMD and Intel in the economic and medium price ranges, today we move to the high end by comparing the Ryzen 9 3900X to the i9 9900K. Only a few years ago, in this price range, the comparison would have been almost useless, since Intel solutions almost always managed to have better performance than AMD ones.
The situation has totally changed with the release, by AMD, of the new Zen 2 architecture and processors based on the latter: now Intel is not already winning against it but has competitive processors against it both on price and in performance. The datasheets show us that The Ryzen 9 3900X features more cores and more threads than the i9 9900K; such a situation has often been repeated with us because AMD, with its new series of processors, has reduced the cost per core of its CPUs, bringing processors with 6 or 12 cores to the market at competitive prices. Both processors are overclockable and the Ryzen consumes a little more than the i9.
The architectures on which they are based are Zen 2 for the Ryzen 9 3900X and Coffee Lake for the i9 9900K: the first is very recent as it was launched last year, the second has been used for several years. As always we would like to clarify that not all motherboards and processors are compatible with each other, before buying one of these processors check which socket is supported, in this case AM4 for the Ryzen and LGA 1151 for the Intel, from your motherboard or the one you want to buy.
Let’s start the comparison between the two processors with Cinebench, a widely used software that allows us to compare the performance of the two CPUs in both multi-thread and single-thread. As you can see, in the first case the performance difference is clear with the Ryzen 9 3900X that it is clearly the master, the situation becomes more balanced, but it always remains to the advantage of AMD, in the single-thread test.
Even in tests with wPrime the Ryzen 9 3900X is the best detaching not just the i9 9900K.
The tests on 7-Zip confirm that the Ryzen 9 is superior, in general use, to the i9: even in the tests on this program the AMD solution is the best with a major advantage in performance.
Nel gaming the situation is reversed, with l’i9 9900K that turns out to be the best solution albeit not with a net advantage. Clearly this advantage becomes more or less large depending on which game is being examined, but generally the difference is between 5% and 10%.
The test data give us a very precise idea of what the two CPUs are able to offer: the Ryzen 9 3900X was always ahead in all production tests, with a clear advantage in software that uses multiple threads well and less in those that use a single thread. In gaming, the i9 manages to reverse the situation establishing itself as the best solution, but the gap that divides it from Ryzen is not so high and in a normal gaming situation both CPUs will be able to give you excellent performance, we can assure you.
Summing up, which one do we recommend between the two? Our choice can only fall on Ryzen 9 3900X: it costs less than the i9, in production tests it was always the best and in gaming it manages to keep up with its Intel counterpart. We recommend the i9 only to those of you who are only interested in gaming and always want to have maximum performance, people to whom that 5/10% less performance than the Ryzen could weigh, but this difference is only noticeable in those situations in which the CPU is not limited by the GPU.
