IC shipments to reach 430 billion in 2022

The pandemic is less and less present on our planet earth and with all the problems that it entails, nothing stops. Now everything has to continue as before and with this I tell you that IC shipments are expected to reach a record 427.7 billion this year, according to the latest IC Insights forecast. This semiconductor market researcher estimates that shipments will increase 9.2 percent this year. That’s less than the 22 percent gain in 2021 during part of the pandemic, which was the biggest gain since 2010.

If this happens in 2022, that would be almost five times as many ICs as were shipped in the year 2000 and almost 44 times as many as were shipped in 1980. If we look at it this way, the data really illustrates how many of the products depend on integrated circuits and how integrated they are in modern society.

IC Insights notes that 2019 was the last time there was a drop in IC shipments and only the fifth time in market history with a year-over-year decline. In fact, there has never been two consecutive years with a drop in shipments.

The organization World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) recognizes 33 major categories of IC-type products. Of those, only three (SRAM, DSP, and gate array) are expected to see a decrease in drive shipments. A dozen of the remaining 30 segments are forecast to match or grow more than the 9.2 percent average growth rate for the industry as a whole.
