Imagination unveils the PowerVR GT7900 for Android game consoles

Android-based game consoles received a lot of attention in connection with investments such as Ouya, and although interest has cooled in enthusiast circles, it is a market that is still observed by industry professionals. Now British Imagination Technologies is releasing a new graphics license intended for the category.

The newcomer is called PowerVR GT7900 and is a new configuration in the Series7XT family, where the number of clusters has doubled compared to the GT7800. It is thus about 16 clusters or 512 cores, which with a 16-nanometer technology (Finfet +, TSMC) and the target frequency 800 MHz should be able to deliver over 800 GFLOPS in theoretical performance – well over previous generation game consoles, but also graphics cards in the entry-level segment.

At the same time, Imagination emphasizes that the graphics processor’s theoretical speeds do not only apply during shorter shocks, but also during longer periods. This is thanks to both the latest 14/16 nm technologies and the company’s energy-efficient architecture based on Tile-Based Deferred Rendering (TBDR).

The PowerVR GT7900 is now available to interested licensees and the first finished circuits with the graphics processor are expected to appear later in 2016. For those who are eager for more information, Imagination will attend both the Mobile World Congress and Game Developer Conference in early March, where they also showcase new Dwarf Hall graphics demon with “console-like” effects.
