Intel i7 10700K vs Intel i7 9700K: Which is Best? - Performance in comparison

Intel i7 10700K vs Intel i7 9700K: Which is Best? – Performance in comparison – After a long wait, Intel has finally decided to release its highly anticipated new CPUs, with the 10 series of processors from the famous company which has therefore made its debut on the market.

Among the new proposals, one of the most interesting is obviously the Intel 17 10700K, that is that high-end product dedicated to the consumer market that promises to take the place of the still very valid i7 9700K. Will Intel be able with this new 10700K to propose a valid product and able to mark a decisive upgrade compared to its predecessor? Let’s find out together in this comparison!

Intel i7 10700K vs Intel i7 9700K: Comparison of datasheets

Analyzing the data sheet of the two Intel proposals the first thing that catches the eye is certainly the different architecture, with the i7 10700K based on Comet Lake and no longer on Coffee Lake. This change also led to a different socket, with the new Intel CPU now using the LGA 1200 socket, a variation that forces you to buy a new motherboard for this 10 series of Intel processors. As for brute force the main differences between the two processors are found in the number of threads, which go from 8 to 16, and in the cache, which in the i7 10700K is doubled compared to the i7 9700K. The greater number of threads of the i7 10700K, although this is a good thing, should not surprise particularly, being the whitefly in this case the processor of the last generation, inexplicably devoid of hypertreading due to some strange maneuver by Intel. . Finally, the frequencies also received a slight boost with the latter CPU.

This increase in performance, however, has a weight especially as regards the TDP, with the i7 10700K requiring 125 W, which is 30 more than the previous model. Last noteworthy is that both processors in question are part of Intel’s K series and, consequently, are therefore overclockable.

Intel i7 10700K vs Intel i7 9700K: Benchmark

Cinebench R20

The first phase of our comparison between the two processors is represented by Cinebench R20, which is a software capable of analyzing the performance of the CPUs both in terms of single-thread and multi-thread. As easily predictable, this test denotes a clear superiority of the new Intel processor with regard to multi-threading, with such a difference that it becomes practically imperceptible in the single-thread comparison.

wPrime

The wPrime test highlights the significantly better performance of the Intel i7 10700K, with the new product of the famous company that far outclasses its direct competitor in this benchmark.

7-Zip

Tests on 7-Zip, both in terms of compression and decompression, confirm the great advantage of the i7 10700K on the younger brother, with the latest proposal from Intel that manages to obtain results between 35 and 45% better than the processor of the previous year.

Video games

As for video games, the improvement made by the Intel i7 10700K compared to its predecessor is practically nil, with different titles running at the same framerate with both processors or at most they get a few percentage points ahead of Intel’s latest proposal. The data you see below was obtained using an MSI GTX 1080 Gaming 8G in combination with the processors.

Intel i7 10700K vs Intel i7 9700K Conclusions: Which is the best?

As you may have seen from the various benchmarks in this article we are faced with a much better product than the previous one, but which, however, fails to establish itself as an essential upgrade for all fans. Faced with much better performance in general use, with improvements that even reach 40/50% in some tests, in fact we have a practically stagnant gaming situation. The very good results with regard to general use should not be too deceiving, as even the Ryzen 7 3700x manages to offer very similar performances in almost all benchmarks.

If you are building a new configuration or if you are updating a decidedly old one and you want to buy an Intel CPU, our advice is therefore to throw yourself into the new model., since the 9700K does not present any performance advantage, except for a lower TDP, and since the price difference between the two processors is not so significant. If, on the other hand, you want to switch to the Intel 10700K from the 9700K or other relatively recent Intel processors, the situation is decidedly different: the performance upgrade is not worth it., especially considering how the almost 400 euros of the processor must be added another abundant hundred euros for a motherboard that supports the new LGA 1200 adopted by Intel’s 10 series. The Intel i7 10700K is therefore ultimately a very good CPU, although it would have been quite reasonable to expect something more from Intel, especially considering the big improvements AMD made with the latest Ryzen series.
