Today the well-known leaker Enthusiastic Citizen tells us that the next Intel HEDT and desktop processors known as Sapphire Rapids and Raptor Lake will be released in October, this would be a year after Alder Lake.
Also, Intel’s HEDT platform, hasn’t seen an update in a long time and, judging by this rumor and what we have been seeing, it will take a different path than previous generations.
To begin with, they will not be marketed as the Core-X series, but as Xeon W3400/2400, so they’re probably targeting the same consumer space as Threadripper PRO. The market for high core count CPUs with more power and connectivity options is slowly dying out as desktop CPUs get more cores and even more advanced motherboards.
As far as we know the 13th generation Raptor Lake will appear in October with support for existing motherboards, but also for the new high-end Z790 platform. The rumor says that there will be a new series of 700 motherboards, including the H770 and B760, to be released next year. With this Intel has a very similar release schedule for the 12th Gen series, therefore one could assume that the K series CPUs will be among the first to be released.
