Istanbul Ethereum hard fork scheduled for December 4th

The next major update of Ethereum, Istanbul – the last in the Metropolis series and in version 1.x – is scheduled for activation on the main network on December 4.

This decision was made during a teleconference.
Ethereum developers on October 25th. Later, developer Danno Ferrin proposed activating Istanbul on block 9 056 000, which is due to be mined on December 4.

During the discussion, the developers agreed that in case of any unexpected problems with updating from now and a week until December 4, Istanbul activation in the main network will be delayed for one month – until January 8, 2020.

“As for the spare date [8 января] “If we are going to postpone the update and change the time, we need to create a new client … and make sure that everyone has installed it,” Ferrin said during the discussion. “It takes at least four weeks to re-prepare for activation.”

Two days before the activation of the previous system-wide Constantinople update, the developers decided to postpone
hard fork due to a discovered vulnerability. Then the Ethereum network was still divided, despite the postponement of the update, and the hard fork took place
March 1, simultaneously with the deployment of the St. Petersburg update.

This time, the Ethereum developers decided to decide in advance on a backup date in case of unforeseen circumstances. Ethereum Foundation developer Piper Merriam said:

“There is no reason to suppose that we will not be able to deploy the update in the first week of December. Now we are just setting a few spare dates so that we can always change our mind if necessary. ”

Ethereum developers finally approved mid-August
A list of six code changes that will be activated during the Istanbul update. The second part of Istanbul will be the last hard fork before moving to Ethereum 2.0. Metropolis version delayed deployment in August
due to developers of the Parity Ethereum alternative client who did not manage to implement all EIP.
