It seems that the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D will not be able to be overclocked

These processors arrive to compete with the new Intel, the 12th Generation, and as expected, we assume that the CPU AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D could be overclocked. However, that might not be the case, as a recent report claims that AMD asked motherboard vendors to remove BIOS/UEFI overclocking options.

The information is confirmed, first by a user of the Chinese social media platform Bilibili and later shared on Twitter. In the original post, the user shared the first image of the processor, which has the OPN and QR codes blurred to prevent AMD from knowing who leaked the data.

Shortly after the first report was shared, the team at TechPowerUp he asked his sources if they could confirm the rumour, which they did. AMD reportedly asked motherboard vendors to remove overclocking options for Vermeer-X (Ryzen 7 5800X3D) CPUs from UEFI/BIOS in late January. For now, only AMD knows the reason for removing this feature.

When asking motherboard manufacturers to remove overclocking support for the processor, the company sent the following message: “5800X3D 8C16T 100-xxxxxxxxx 105 W AGESA: PI 1206b 1/28 Please hide Vermeer-X CPU OC BIOS SETUP options.”

Reading the message doesn’t give us any details to justify AMD’s decision, but it still left us wondering a few things. For example, AMD has asked motherboard vendors to remove overclocking options on systems running Agesa 1.2.0.6 B, which means it may add them back in a future release. If that is the case, the problem would be with the firmware and not the hardware.

Another plausible reason to remove the feature would be an issue between 3D V-Cache and overclocking at high operating frequencies. This possibility would also explain why AMD decided to lower the base and boost speed of the upcoming processor compared to the Ryzen 7 5800X.
