The German bitcoin mining company Northern Bitcoin will merge with the American company Whinstone. Together they started the construction of the largest bitcoin mining farm ever. That is, if we have to believe the press release from both companies. If it really happens, the mining farm will immediately become the largest data center in North America.
Great plans
They are big plans. The mining farm will have a capacity of a gigawatt, spread over an area of more than 40 hectares. Or according to the press release, an area of approximately 57 football pitches.
The first phase of the construction will be completed in the first quarter of 2020. Then the mining farm already has a capacity of 300 megawatts. The entire site is expected to be finished in the last quarter of 2020.
The mining company wants to rent the equipment to different customers. The first two customers are said to be two listed companies that mine bitcoins. The bitcoin mining farm of Northern Bitcon and Whinstone can also be used for other purposes, such as rendering videos and running Artificial Intelligence applications.
Competition with China?
The fact that there will be a mining farm in the United States is interesting. Most activities related to bitcoin mining take place in China. It is estimated that Chinese miners control about 81 percent of the bitcoin network.
Bitmain is based in China, providing specialized hardware to mine bitcoins. The equipment is becoming faster, more efficient and more energy efficient. In addition, energy costs in China are low, which makes bitcoin mining attractive.
That sounds positive, were it not for the fact that the Chinese government does not like bitcoin and cryptocurrencys. For example, Chinese legislators have banned ICOs in China. And it seemed for a long time that bitcoin mining would be banned in China. But the mining of bitcoin has recently been found illegal in China.
