Manufacturer TSMC Announces 5nm N4X Process

TSMC today unveiled its new technology for N4X process. This technology aims to adapt to high workloads in high-performance equipment «HPC«.

For you to understand, N4X is the first HPC-centric technology representing the highest performance and highest clock rates in the 5-nanometer family. The ‘X’ designation is reserved for TSMC technologies that are specifically developed for HPC products.

HPC products have the following unique attributes:

  • Higher performance and generally higher frequencies
  • Power consumption on the order of 100 watts, approaching 1000 watts in extreme cases
  • Higher utilization and a higher percentage of dynamic power in the power envelope
  • More SRAM (> 1Gb) in SoC
  • Higher memory bandwidth
  • Higher speed I / O connectivity
  • Tlarger matrix rigs with challenges to manufacturability and performance

Given the extensive experience this manufacturer has in producing the 5nm, it has now further enhanced its technology with ideal features for high-performance computing products to create the N4X. These features include:

  • Device design and structures optimized for high drive current and maximum frequency
  • Back-end metal stack optimization for high-performance designs
  • Super high density metal-insulating-metal capacitors for robust power delivery under extreme performance loads

Thanks to these new HPC features, the N4X will offer a performance increase of up to 15% over the N5, or up to 4% over the even faster N4P at 1.2 volts.

According to the manufacturer, it is expected that N4X go into production for the first half of 2023.
