Microsoft canceled Windows 10X release

In October 2019, Microsoft introduced the Surface Neo to the audience, a dual-screen laptop that ran the new Windows 10X operating system. A year later, the developers promised to release a new version of the OS for classic single-screen laptops, but on May 18, 2021, in the official blog, Microsoft announced the cancellation of the system launch. At the same time, the company will not give up the ideas and technologies of 10X, on which it has been working for several years. The best practices will appear in traditional Windows 10.

Some of the technologies are already actively integrating into Windows 10: improved voice typing, a new container for launching programs, as well as an upgraded touch keyboard for tablets. The developers noted that they continue to invest in technologies that were supposed to be part of the new Windows 10X. Also, the company is not going to give up experiments and software development for new devices.

Windows 10X was originally slated to hit the operating system market in 2021 to compete with Chrome OS. This is not the first time Microsoft has tried to create a light version of the OS for tablets and laptops. The first project was Windows RT, introduced for the original Surface in 2012, and five years later, Windows 10 S. The latter was criticized for its limited functionality and the inability to install third-party applications that were not available in the Microsoft Store.
