Microsoft is testing disk space reservation for Windows 10 updates

I guess each of us had to face the lack of space on the system disk at some point, especially in the times when there was a damn expensive 120 GB SSD. Times may have changed, and the vast majority of us already use more capacious media, but I sincerely doubt whether Microsoft’s latest idea will be warmly received.

Microsoft today released the Insider Preview Build 18312 (19H1) update for Windows 10 users in the so-called “Fast Ring”. Thus, he began testing his new feature, i.e. reserving disk space only for subsequent system updates. The novelty is not particularly complicated – the system simply “takes” 7 GB of free disk space and prevents it from being overwritten. All this to: “ensure adequate performance and successful updates of your devices.” The company itself claims that:

With reserved storage, some disk space will be reserved for updates, applications, temporary files, and system caches. Our goal is to improve the day-to-day functionality of your computer by ensuring that critical operating system functions always have access to disk space.

As far as I have mixed feelings about this function, I will accept the novelty in the form of a factory reset of the system with open hands. This is something like a simple disk wipe (either all or just the one your system is on) that removes all personal files and accounts, installed applications, and even restores factory settings. So it will work like a factory reset of Android.
